The development and interconnection of the Baltic countries’ energy markets plays an important role in the European Union’s energy strategy. The project to bi-directionally connect the Latvian and Estonian transmission systems is expected to provide a stable and reliable tool for managing the flow of natural gas in the region.
The strategic investment of this project is the construction of a natural gas compressor station in Puiatu – in the western part of Estonia.
The project will increase the integration of the Baltic countries’ gas markets and, in particular, provide Estonia and Finland with access to Incukalns, located in Latvia, the region’s largest underground gas storage facility with a capacity of 2.3 billion m³.
As part of the construction of the gas compressor station in Puiatu, the following facilities were realized, among others:
– a natural gas compressor building based on a two-stage centrifugal compressor driven by an electric motor with a capacity of 416,000 m³/h,
– a valve station on the existing DN700 transmission pipeline between Tallinn and Karksi,
– process gas filtration and drying system,
– control room,
– energy infrastructure facilities,
– other facilities and installations necessary for the operation of the gas compressor station.
Improved security of supply will increase the region’s resilience to change, and reduce the cost of transmission disruptions. Regional gas prices will fall due to access to the global LNG market, and the competitive advantage of natural gas compared to other fuels will improve.
Implementation of the project will simultaneously achieve a number of goals:
– will improve the energy independence of the countries in the Baltic Sea region,
– will ensure diversification and flexibility of gas supply,
– will increase the integration of the Baltic gas market,
– will reduce gas prices in the region for consumers.
